Same sex couples and singles aren’t really “infertile” so its a very different type of conversation. These couples aren’t “trying” and not getting pregnant, but rather are missing a couple of ingredients that are need to create their family. Discussing the ins and outs of female reproduction with men is always good for a few laughs! But, educating the fathers to be about the entire process is one of the most enjoyable aspects of this type of conference. When we talk about finances, its good to be able to give the “dad’s” lots of different options, including asking a family member or friend to be a gestational carrier or asking a sister or cousin to be an egg donor. Educating the couples about the pitfalls of each type of family building is part of the satisfaction we receive at the end!
Discussing pre-conception genetics workup can really get everyones eyes glazed over, but our friend and colleague, Kim Monroe from Genepeeks really made the idea of virtual progeny “come to life” and realizing that you have the best interests of your future child when using this advanced technology!
We hope to join up with the conference in Brussels in September, to bring this info to our European parents to be.
