Surrogate Support: What does it really mean?

Everyone seems to talk about Surrogate Support, but what does it really mean and what sort of support do Surrogates desire? Not only during the Journey but before and after.

Surrogate Focus Groups

We were curious about this too.

So we had a series of focus groups with prior surrogates from our agency and others to try and find out what was needed to provide an optimal experience for our future surrogates.

First, they really want to feel that their Agency is taking care of them. From the first interaction upon application through the post-partum period.

Having a lot of information as new surrogates were always appreciated and having a dedicated case manager but also knowing who else they could count on, went a long way to alleviating the stress of the matching process.

Feeling like they always had someone in their “corner” made all the difference, not only in the early stages of the surrogacy but all the way through the pregnancy and afterward.

Having someone explain the medical screening process, the legal contract phase, the social work, and psychological evaluations were important at the beginning and following up often (sometimes daily and other times weekly) during the pregnancy was the number one requirement for Surrogate Support.

So, We Did Something About It!

With this information in mind, 3 Sisters Surrogacy, has begun a series of “on-line” and “video-support” for not only 3SS surrogates but anyone who is going through the process as a surrogate.

Having topics like Expectations during the application and matching process, Strategies for managing work, home, children, and relationships during the journey.

Other great topics that can help make the experience positive included, Effective Communication Strategies, Conflict resolution (BIGGIE) and a Birth Plan that includes some unknowns (c-sections, bed rest, etc.).

One of the fantastic Ph.D. level psychologists that we work with, Dr. Francis Benton will be leading monthly sessions via “video chat” that will focus on support for surrogates and addressing any topics that could help make the experience as stress- free and joyful as possible.

Additionally, we are hosting our first Meet-Up Houston in November for Houston area surrogates and those interested in the process.
